56 political prisoners released in Myanmar

Yangon, Oct 8 (IANS): A total of 56 remaining political prisoners of conscience were released Tuesday by Myanmar under a fresh amnesty order of President U Thein Sein.

The release of prisoners is the second since the country's president made a promise during a trip to Britain in July that all prisoners of conscience would be freed by the end of the year.

Myanmar freed 73 prisoners including 68 prisoners of conscience in July, reports Xinhua.

The release came shortly after President U Thein Sein left for Brunei on Tuesday to attend the 23rd summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.

Up to now, a total of 29,820 prisoners are estimated to have been pardoned since the new civilian government took office on March 30, 2011.
