Aadhaar card: SC to hear government plea

New Delhi, Oct 4 (IANS): The Supreme Court will hear the government plea seeking modification of its order so that Aadhaar card could be permitted as a proof of identity in the implementation of several welfare schemes, including giving subsidised LPG gas cylinders to the weaker sections of the society.

The apex court bench headed by Chief Justice P. Sathasivam said it would hear the government plea Oct 8 after Solicitor General Mohan Parasaran mentioned the matter Friday morning.

The court earlier ruled that Aadhaar card was not necessary as a proof of identity for getting the government benefits under several welfare schemes, including the National Food Security Act.
