Mumbai, Oct 2 (IANS): Continuing its crackdown, Mumbai police Tuesday arrested three civic officials over last Friday's building collapse in south Mumbai which claimed 61 lives, an official said here.
The three arrested are deputy superintendent B.S. Chavan, assistant engineer Rahul Jadhav and market inspector Jamil Kazi, said a police officer.
The trio was produced before the Bhoiwada Court where a magistrate remanded them in police custody till Oct 4.
Jadhav was among 18 other officials against whom the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai ordered an inquiry last Sunday.
Chavan and Kazi were suspended last Sunday for lapses that caused the state's second-worst building collapse this year.
Last Saturday, the police arrested Ashokkumar Mehta, proprietor of Mamamiya Decorators who had leased an office-cum-godown on the ground floor of the ill-fated building.
Mehta is alleged to have carried out illegal modifications and renovations on the ground floor which could have weakened the 33-year old building, leading to its sudden collapse early Friday.
Among other charges, Mehta has been charged with "culpable homicide not amounting to murder" and is in police custody.
