Mortar shell strikes Iraqi mission in Damascus

Damascus, Sep 26 (IANS): An Iraqi woman was killed and three others wounded Thursday when a mortar shell struck the Iraqi consulate in Syria's capital Damascus, Xinhua reported citing the state-run SANA news agency.

The mortar round slammed into a hall in the consulate and caused material damage to the building, the report said.

The embassy is adjacent to the empty US embassy in the upscale district of Abu Rummaneh in Damascus.

Mortar attacks have become increasingly common in Damascus and its suburbs but Thursday's attack marks the second instance when mortars targetted foreign missions in Damascus.

Last week, three people were injured when a mortar shell struck the Russian embassy on Burnieh Street in Damascus.

The Syrian government blames the Western-backed rebels for indiscriminate mortar fire that often misses the target and hits populated areas.
