New Delhi, Sep 25 (IANS): Aiming to improve the urban transportation system, the union government has sanctioned 2,433 buses for different cities in the country, an official statement said Wednesday.
At a meeting of the Central Sanctioning and Monitoring Committee (CSMC) held Tuesday, the ministry of urban development sanctioned buses for Jaipur, Naya Raipur, Puducherry, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Maharashtra, the statement said.
"The bus system is the most popular of the mass rapid transit systems, as it helps people to take advantage of employment opportunities by helping them to gain access to inaccessible areas," Sudhir Krishna, secretary (Urban Development), said while chairing the meeting.
Krishna stressed the need to operate the buses in a sustainable manner.
The buses will have state-of-the art facilities like intelligent transport systems including features like LED display, CCTV cameras, GPRS, passenger information system, vehicle tracking system and automatic fare collection system.
