Ramkrishna Mission-run college vandalised in Bengal

Kolkata, Sep 22 (IANS): In yet another incident of vandalism in an educational institution, a Ramakrishna Mission-run college in West Bengal's Howrah district was ransacked, a Mission spokesperson said here Sunday.

The incident happened Saturday night when a mob ransacked the Ramakrishna Mission Shilpamandira, Polytechnic College in Belur in the district, blaming the institution for student Sarthak Mazumdar's death on the college premises.

"Around 50-60 people forcibly entered the premises, beat up the security guards and vandalised the institution. Although Mazumdar's death is tragic, the ransacking is unacceptable," the spokesperson said.

Mazumdar, 18, died while taking a dip in a pond on the college premises. After the college informed police, his body was fished out.

Police said over a dozen people were arrested, but a court granted them bail Sunday.

The incident comes after the Christ Church School in North 24 Parganas district was vandalised Sep 12 by parents and guardians following the death of a minor student after allegedly being ragged.
