Srinagar, Sep 21 (IANS): A call for a shutdown by separatists in Srinagar and other parts of Kashmir Valley affected life Saturday.

Senior separatist leader Syed Ali Geelani called for a Kashmir Valley shutdown to protest the firing incidents in Gagaran near Shopian town Sep 7 and Sep 11, in which five people were killed.

Shops, public transport and other businesses remained closed in Srinagar, while government offices, banks and post offices functioned normally.

Private transport also plied on some city roads. Traffic movement was normal on the Srinagar-Jammu and Srinagar-Leh highways.

Police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) contingents were deployed in full riot gear at sensitive places in Srinagar, although no restrictions were imposed anywhere in the city.

About 100,000 candidates are taking Saturday a test conducted by the state service selection board (SSB) which would grant them employment with the state government. Elaborate arrangements are in place for the smooth conduct of the test.

Classes were suspended in educational institutions as schools, colleges and universities are places where candidates would take the test.
