Shillong, Sep 20 (IANS): Justice Prafulla Chandra Pant was Friday sworn in as chief justice of the Meghalaya High Court.
Governor KK Paul administered the oath of office to Pant at Raj Bhavan. He was a judge at the Uttarakhand High Court prior to this.
Justice Pant, 61, succeeded Justice Toom Meera Kumari, whose term ended over two months ago. Since her retirement, Justice T Nandakumar Singh was officiating as the acting chief justice.
Chief Minister Mukul Sangma, Deputy Chief Minister in-charge of Law Rowell Lyngdoh and assembly Speaker Abu Taher Mondal were among those who attended the swearing-in ceremony.
"My duty was to try to understand the problem of the people, particularly the ligitants, lawyers and stakeholders. I will try my best to do the needful to redress their grievances," Pant said later.
