Mumbai, Feb 18: Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray has tendered an apology on behalf of his party for the attack on a private party by Sena workers on Valentine’s Day in Nallasopara in neighbouring Thane district.
What these people did was despicable and condemnable, Thackeray was quoted as saying in the Sena mouthpiece Saamna on Saturday.
"I am ashamed to call the perpetrators of this act Shiv Sainiks," he said. It is said that women were beaten up in the Nallasopara incident. If that really happened, then it is a symbol of cowardice, he added.
I have always instructed Shiv Sainiks that in any situation women should not be humiliated and harassed. Have they forgotten our history where Shivaji Maharaj sent back the daughter-in-law of the Subhedar of Kalyan, with honour, he added.
Thackeray said ‘our opposition to the Valentine Day is from an ideology. There is no reason for opposing those in love, in a Taliban like manner.
But whatever goes on in the name of Valentine’s Day does not fit into our culture. What goes on is an obscene marketing of love. That is why, at many places, Sainiks targeted commercial establishments connected with the celebrations’, the Sena chief said.
