Kundapur: Despite building, fish at Koteshwar market sold in open

Kundapur, Sep 7: The fish market at Koteshwar here is facing a strange dilemma. Though the market has a well-equipped building inaugurated not long back, the fisherwomen here have been selling fish in the opening, right outside the building.

The fish market built under National Agricultural Development project at a cost of Rs 10 lac was built by Karnataka Fisheries Development Board Ltd., Mangalore.

"We carry out our business away from the building in the rain and thunderstorm as the building was constructed in an unscientific manner by the fisheries board," allege the women.


What is the problem?

The building looks good from the outside, but it has only one door. The women are facing difficulties to enter and exit the building.  Besides that, the tables erected for sales have increased their inconvenience than helping them.  The drainage in between the place for keeping fish and the customers is unscientific.  Several women customers are said to have slipped and fallen here. 

The women allege that the building engineer and the contractor were made aware of the likely difficulties at the time of construction.  The problems have cropped up as they went ahead with the construction ignoring the needs of the fisher folk, they said.  Several of their requests to the gram panchayat and the department have yielded no results, allege the fisherwomen.


What are the demands?

There should be two more doors on either side of the building.  The drainage should be constructed under the ground and the toilet behind the building should be reconstructed according to the needs of the women -  these are their demands.
 
“Though we have submitted our requests to the department concerned, the department is urging us to conduct business in the building without listening to our grievances.  How can we do business without solving our problems? If the situation continues, the 2,500 women among us will go on strike,” said Ratna, president of retail fish dealers association at Kundapur taluk

    What ever it is, and where ever they sell, public want get fish for reasonable price, but central Government increase the oil price, and other commodities that we are noticing, but fish without payment God provided in the sea. who is getting benefit, please think and reply.

    To address the entrance issue, they should rotate the seats everyday so that everyone gets a chance
    to have a seat close to the entrance. similar thing happens with agents in MCC building, lalbagh mangalore.

    I do agree there should be proper drainage system,water supply & some Ceiling fans. KFDC should visit & try to rectify this.

    But some people comments blindly here like old fisherwoman....,

    Simple,Bangalore & Stany D'sa, Balehonnur, did you ever visited the site before commenting.

    1) If you keep all the side walls open , all animals like dogs, cats & cattle will enter inside the building. Cat & Dog will grab the fishes & cattle will occupy at night & put cowdung inside. Who wil control this, people can't control the rubbish dumped there out side the building !!

    2)Entrance shutter is more than 10 feet, do you think fisher woman carry fish baskets higher than 10 feet.

    3) Present ventilation is more than enough they have to restrict the birds entering inside & disturbing as well shitting inside.

    4) Roof cover is more than 12 feet on the lower hight & almost 20 feet at centre.( They would have increased the hight slighty)

    4) All are using Ice for the safety of the fish & no one is selling without putting ice. So don't think fish will stale due to condition of the building.

    The real fact is different.

    1). They want more entrance why because , they think the person sitting near the entrance will get more business & customers don't want o go inside the market till the other end. !!

    2). There are some senior fish Merchants who dominate the other ladies in the market want to sit at the entrance. But unfortunately KFCD alloted the seats on lottery basis as per the draw. So, this dominater did not like small scale sellers & juniors sitting at the entrance of the new Building & getting more business.

    Even though this Juniors want to occupy the new building but Seniors not allowing them.

    Same thing happened in Padubidri fish market also.

    Hope you people understood by now. What ever facilities you provide there will be some selfish politics.

    All your observation of this fish market building is spot on.
    The entrance with such low rain\sun cover, how they can carry things inside. Everytime they have to unload outside and take it in - double job.
    During summer, if they sit inside the four walled market, their fish will turn stale within no time and customers would not want to stay inside even for a couple of minutes in that sweltering heat and stench.

    Garbage dumping anywhere and everywhere is a Indian culture along with spitting pan or anything else from the mouth\blowing nose.
    It adds to the beauty of the environment!!!
    government do not usually supply garbage bins. If made available, that new bin can be traced back in the same shop next day!!!!!
    Please make properly covered (top) but open (all sides), elevated\slanting floor fish markets with good drains and sizeable safety tank. Make mandatory everyone using the market to sell fish, to take turns to clean market everyday.

    The 10 lakh fish building design is disgusting. First of all the fish market building cannot have four wall barrier as it require adequate ventilation from all the sides. Especially during summer it is stuffy and smelly and need good air circulation. The fisher folk demand is genuine for hygienic toilet for all and proper drainage must be laid. It is the duty of the concerned department to provide garbage bins. One cannot award jobs to 'Maistries' without sensible design.

    This is the habbit of our people. They have a market building but they prefer open yard. There are public toilets, they use open space only. There are garbage dumping bins but they like road sides. They also have 100 reasons to justify their acts!

    This is too bad not to use the modern fish market built by spending Rs.10.lakhs.The defficiency in the building can be ractified but the local authorities need to take corrective action and put the fish market to use.All the best.Thanq.

    Initially penalty/mild force is necessary to make them follow the rules in the interest of larger sections of the society.
