Mangalore, Feb 16: A month-long campaign to spread awareness among various departments and general public on Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act 2000, will be organized by the Campaign Against Child Labour-K (CACL-K). 

Renni D’Souza, district convener, CACL-K, addressing press persons said that the purpose of the campaign, was to bring about awareness among many organizations as well as the general public, about the Act that was passed in the year 2000.

Mamatha Gatti, president, zilla panchayat, will inaugurate the campaign on Friday February 17, at the zilla panchayat hall, while Dr H V Parshwanath, deputy commissioner would preside.

Jeo D’Silva, officer, Women and child welfare department, said that according to the Act, anybody below 18 years was considered a child.  Any atrocities and abuse on children or any crime committed by them and all children related issues were dealt by the Child Welfare Committee (CWC), which was vested with all rights to deal the cases.   

He further said that apart from CWCs at Belgaum and Bangalore, rest all the committees are almost dormant owing to lack of awareness.
