21 trucks detained for sand mining in Goa

Panaji, Sep 4 (IANS): Twenty-one trucks were detained in Goa late Wednesday for ferrying illegally mined sand, police said.

Police said the drivers and the owner of the trucks were fined Rs.2,000 each for illegally mining sand at Honda village in Sattari, a sub-district located 50 km from the capital.

"No arrests have been made. Only their offences were compounded by a magistrate," a police official said.

The incident underlines the extent of illegal mining of sand in Goa, even as sand mining all over India was banned following a recent controversy in Uttar Pradesh.
