Sringeri: High tension wire kills school boy, injures two; teacher suffers heart attack

Sringeri, Sep 3: In a tragic incident, a high tension electric wire claimed the life of a 16-year-old school boy and injured two others at Dharmakopa village, Sringeri in Chikmagalur district on Tuesday September 3.

The deceased has been identified as Karthik, son of Krishna Shetty, resident of Nalooru, Holekoppa. 

The incident took place in Holekoppa government high school premises when Karthik was carrying a flag pole to install the sports flag on the occasion of Dasara Kreeda Koota and taluk-level rural sports meet.

It is learnt that while Karthik was carrying the iron flag pole along with his friend Ranjan (16), the pole accidentally touched a high tension wire and Karthik was electrocuted while Ranjan sustained injuries. Anil (33), a member of Sri Rama Yuvaka Sangha who came to the rescue of the boys, was also injured.

In further tragedy, Keshava Murthy, a physical education teacher who witnessed the incident suffered a heart attack.

The injured persons and the physical education teacher were rushed to Manipal hospital. Ranjan and Anil are said to have suffered serious burn injuries.

Minister for youth affairs Abhayachandra Jain visited the hospital and announced that the cost of treatment will be borne by the government.

"It is dangerous to have high tension wires inside and near school premises. I will meet the education minister and the CM and discuss steps to remove such wires from in and around schools. At the same time, both students and teachers must be extra careful when such wires are around," Jain said.

He said that he will visit the family of the deceased on Wednesday September 4.

    Utterly Useless visit by politicians to the emergency wards in the busy hospital. Puts the lives of other serious patients at risk, blocks the entry and exit to the emergency area...these made for media visits are a real pain for the hospital staff!

    They should use insulated cables. The Mescom is looting money and all officers enjoying life but not a single engineer is interested in changing the cables into Insulated one. Even under developed countries like Burma,Vietnam,Cambodia are using cables which are not dangerous for public.

    Very sad and unfortunate incident.

    I remember same thing happened in Maharashtra NCP rally where party representatives carrying flag with metal rod touch the electric wires above on road side and 2 people succumbed.

    Sad Incident.May his soul rest in peace.I believe, it was 11 KV HT PCL. Normally 11Kv power carrier line minimum pole height is 32 feet and due to slag between two poles PCL may worst case slag shall not be more that 25 feet.If it slag more then definitely supply company is held responsible and also pole is less than 32 feet. I don't think a boy can hold 20~25 feet iron pole with flag. Conclusion the PCL are at very low height.

    So sad due to negligence of Electrical dept.a Boy lost his life,a Family their hopes and many others injured.and Minister is telling should be carefulto the students!who should be careful by Installation?is there no instructions to be followed by the elektric department?it should be high .afterall it is H:T:wires.and in India they are just careless even with normal wires hanging just above the head .during rainy seasons they are even hanging down.Govt,should really make some Arrangements to put the wires Underground like other countries do.so can many lives and sorrows of many families be minimized.

    I am not a witness here...
    But the PT master should have some brain not to give long iron flag pole to the child close to HT cable...
    Life around is full of hazards...
    Some well known, some half known, some unknown...
    Well known are often avoided...
    Unknown are left to fate...
    Half known must not be taken for granted...

    In INDIA we are promising act only when somebody lost his life. Why the school authorities are so negligent and what about electricity dept. Human life has no value in our country . May his soul rest in peace
