Karkala, Sep 1: The government PU college here requires urgent repairs before its post-centenary silver jubilee celebrations this year to add meaning to the celebrations. Though thousands of people studied, excelled and became famous after studying here, it is sad that nobody has paid attention towards its maintenance.
The primary school is the first to have started in the history of Karkala in the year 1888. It was upgraded to high school in the year 1919. From then on, it became famous as board high school. It got renamed as Government Pre-University College in the year 1986. The institute which has completed 125 years of existence is on the verge of celebrating its post-centenary silver jubilee in December, 2013.
Though 200 girls and 283 boys study in pre-university classes here, the maintenance of the college building is not satisfactory. The cement from the walls has peeled out. Tiles have broken and some have come out.
The toilets are in shambles. Though there is a small toilet for girls, the water pipe there is broken and water gets wasted. Boys' toilet does not appear to have been attended to for decades. Cleanliness is a major problem. As there is no roof, the four walls may collapse any time.
Slush field
The college students have participated in several sport events and brought laurels to the college. Though the college should have kept the playground in order to encourage them, it is natural to be shocked when one looks at it. One will wonder whether it is a playground or a slush field. The ground is uneven all over. A trench is made in between it to make the water flow. Several holes can be found in various parts of ground.
Dangerous trees
The area has several trees and their roots can be found above the ground. There are instances when their branches have fallen in the rainy season, posing danger to students.
Examination center
The pre-university college is also an examination center. Several examinations are held here throughout the year. Though a large number of students come here to write exams, the facilities are poor. The furniture in classrooms need repair or replacement. Though furniture is being brought from outside, the students are accommodated in the classrooms according to their number.
Staff problems
Commerce department lecturer’s position is vacant. Political science lecturer’s position is yet to be approved. Clerk’s post is vacant. Librarian is not appointed. Two D group employees are to be employed. Physical education teachers were never employed. The physical education teachers employed now are from high school category.
