Mangalore, Sep 1: Mangalore university will organize ‘Inter-collegiate cultural festival – 2013’ from September 4 to 6 at Mangalagangothri campus, said vice-chancellor T Shivashankara Murthy here on Saturday. For the second time the festival is being conducted in the university campus.
Addressing the presspersons, Professor Murthy said that Dr B Jayashree, Padmashree Awardee, eminent theatre actor and director, Rajya Sabha member, Bangalore will inaugurate the festival on September 4 at 10 am. Air Marshal KC Cariappa will deliver the valedictory address on September 6 at 2.30 pm.
About 1600 students from 67 affiliated colleges of the university will take part in the event. There are five major categories of events such as music, dance, theatre, literary events and fine arts. There will be best group prize in each event in addition to overall championship to the highest scoring college, stated the press release.
On the first day, light vocal solo, folk orchestra, classical instrumental, group song, mimicry, rangoli, cartooning and collage will be held.
On the second day, fold dance, classical dance, quiz, skit, debate (Kannada and English), western vocal, group song (western), clay modeling, poster making, on the spot painting and spot photography competitions will be held. Classical vocal (solo) and mime competitions will be held on September 6.
“The university has focused on professional judges to judge the events to extend maximum benefits to the participating events. We have taken special care to provide medical assistance and grievance redressal cell besides all other facilities”, vice chancellor said.
The selected 40 members including accompanist will be representing Mangalore University in the inter-university cultural festival to be held at Kottayam, Kerala from September 18 – 22.
PG centre in Madikeri completed, another to be set up in Udupi
The postgraduate centre of the Mangalore University coming up at Chikkaluvara village near Kushalnagar in Kodagu will start functioning in the academic year 2013, vice-chancellor said.
“A science block, six housing blocks for teachers and a hostel for women is ready at Chikkaluvaru. A hostel for men and an arts block are under construction,” he added.
Besides, there is possibility of starting another PG centre in Udupi district. Professor Murthy said that the government has given 20 acres of land to set up PG centre and has promised additional 35 acres in the same area of Belapu village.
Accordingly, we have sent the proposal to the higher authorities to release funds. We have sought Rs 5 crore from government to start construction of the first phase at Belapu, he said.
