Bangalore, Aug 29: Athletes like Sahana Kumari, H N Girish and 17 others have been selected for the prestigious Ekalavya Awards bestowed by the state sports board.
Other sportsmen selected include Karuna Jain, S V Sunil, Varsha Puranik, J P Arjun, Swetha Naidu, Ajay Appacchu, G S Sharan, H Rohini, K Mahadev, Binitha Devi, Sagarika Shyam, Aditya Prakash, Sridar S Savanur, Preethan Chawgale and Sanjana Srinivas.

Amongst the 17 selected sportspersons, Sahana Kumari is a high jump champion from Mangalore. She has bagged several medals in state and national level sports meets and also represented India at the Olympics.
"The award will consist of a cash prize of Rs 1.5 lac and the award it self," said K Abhaychandra Jain, minister for fisheries, youth welfare and sports.
Addressing the media at the state youth center auditorium on Wednesday August 28, minister Jain said the award presentation ceremony will be held at the Banquet hall of Vidhana Soudha on August 29 at 5:30 pm.
Kreeda Ratna award
Similar to the Ekalavya award, from the next month ‘Karnataka Kreeda Ratna’ award will be presented to sportsmen from rural areas. The award will consist of Rs 1 lac cash, a bronze idol, uniform and others prizes.
Minister Jain said the award will be presented to sportsmen from different rural sports like Mallakamba, Kambala, Atya-Patya, Kusti, Throwball, Donne Varase, Kho-Kho, Kabbadi, Body building, chess etc.
During the award ceremony, home minister K George will release an achievement issue. Minister Jain will address the gathering and the ceremony will be presided by MLA Roshan Begh.
Transport minister Ramalinga Reddy, food and civil supplies minister Dinesh Gundu Rao, MLA K Govindaraju among others will be present.
