Mysterious death of monkeys at Karkal

Karkal, Aug 28: The locals in Bobbala area on Thellaru road here are scared due to mysterious death of eight monkeys.
The incident has come to light after a two and a half year old monkey was found dead in a compound belonging to Allen on Tuesday, August 27 evening. The house people have said that they had seen the monkey during the last three days wandering outside the house, after being seriously ill. Though an attack by the pet dog is said to be the reason, the death of another seven monkeys immediately after it, has given rise to suspicion. It is also not known why the first monkey was ill before being attacked by the house dog.
Forest officer Subrahmanya Rao, Taluk health officer Dr Krishnananda, director of animal husbandry Dr Nagaraj Balegar and Chief municipal officer Gopalakrishna Shetty visited the place on instructions from Tahsildar Nirmala Devi and collected information. Councilor Mohammed Sherif, Giridhar Nayak, Navin Devadiga etc. were present.
Awareness on health is necessary
Though it will take some days before the reason for the deaths is known, if dead monkeys are left in the open, there are chances of spread of monkey decease which can be dangerous to humans also. If a person suffers from fever these days, it will be necessary to get medical advice. The health department will have to be alert in this direction.
Dr Nagarj Belegar, director of animal husbandry has said that postmortem conducted on the dead monkey has not indicated any attack on it. It is not possible to identify the exact reason.
Dr Krishnananda, Taluk Medical officer said the matter concerning the deaths is referred to the medical center at Shimoga.
