Moodbidri, Aug 26: Moodbidri police have arrested a man for physical and mental cruelty towards his wife demanding additional dowry, driving her out of the house and marrying another woman.
The man is identified as Beluwai village resident Samiulla.
Samiulla had married Shahina Banu of the same village in 2008. The house people of Shahina had given Rs one lac cash and gold jewellery weighing 25 pounds to Samiulla as dowry at the time of the wedding as per his demands.
Samiulla, a driver by profession had urged his wife to get an additional Rs. 2.5 lac for starting a hotel business. When she refused, he sold her jewellery and started the business. He returned after incurring loss in it. Shahina’s father then bought a car for him with borrowed money. The finance company seized the vehicle as Samiulla failed to repay the loan.
Samiulla then asked Shahina, not to remain in the house if she did not bring Rs one lac and drove her out of the house. He has now married a girl from Thokottu states the complaint lodged by Shahina to the court.
As the Moodbidri police station refused to register her complaint of dowry harassment, Shahina had lodged a private complaint in the court on July 15, 2013.
Now Moodbidri police have registered a case and have arrested Samiulla.
