Mangalore, Aug 24: The department of urban development has announced the criteria for selection of candidates for the post of Mayor and deputy Mayor of the Mangalore City Corporation (MCC). The position of Mayor is reserved for female general category and deputy Mayor will be from general male category.
The election for the city corporation was conducted on March 7, 2013, and the results were announced on March 11, 2013. But the reservation is being announced now after five months.
As the position of Mayor is reserved for female general category, members of the Congress party Jacintha Vijaya Alfred, Appi, Nagaveni, Kavitha Sanil, Ratikala, Latha Salian, Prathibha Kulai, Sabitha, Zubeida, Gretta, Sumayya, and Shailaja are eligible. Of these, four-time member from Falnir ward Jacintha Vijaya Alfred is a front-runner. Also in the race are three-time member from Jeppu ward Appi, two-time member from Pachanady Kavitha Sanil, and Derebail ward’s Nagaveni.
As the deputy Mayor’s position is reserved for general male category, senior members have not shown much interest. Navin D’Souza, corporator from Bendoor, who has elected for the fourth time is the most eligible candidate for the post, but speaking to Daijiworld he said that he is not in the race for deputy mayor.
Similarly, senior members Shashidhar Hegde, Mahabala Marla, Lancy L Pinto, and others are eligible but they have not shown any interest.
Ashok D K, and Deepak Poojary are two other names leading in the race for the post of deputy mayor.
Of the 60 wards in Mangalore City Corporation, Congress has 35 seats, BJP 20, JD(S) 2, CPM 1, SDPI 1, and 1 independent.
