Sri Lanka to review report on clash for water

Colombo, Aug 22 (IANS): The Sri Lankan army has received a report based on a probe by a military court into a clash between the troops and a group of civilians this month, an army spokesman said.

Villagers in Weliweriya, a town 26 km away from Colombo, clashed with the army Aug 1 during a protest demanding clean water, Xinhua reported. Three people were killed and many injured in the clash.

The army was accused of firing live bullets at the protesters.

Army spokesman Brigadier Ruwan Wanigasuriya said the report of an army court of inquiry has been handed over to army commander Daya Ratnayake.

Meanwhile, Chief of Defence Staff Gen Jagath Jayasuriya said the army chief will make some recommendations based on the findings of the report.

"This is not something that can be done in a day or two," he said.
