Goa University witnesses student council election protests

Panji, Aug 22 (TNN): The race to the Goa University student council executive committee heated up on Wednesday with the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and Congress student wings boycotting the ongoing process of filing nominations for the election.

A delegation led by Youth Congress president Valanka Alemao and Nationalist Students' Congress Ritesh Rawal met the vice-chancellor and registrar of the Goa University along with complainants alleging irregularities and violation of the varsity's statutes governing the students' election.

The agitating university faculty representatives (UFR) along with around 200 of their student supporters marched into the university premises protesting that the UFR eligibility list was issued late-at 7.30pm-after the university work timings were over.

A complainant, UFR Avalon Carvalho alleged, "None of my complaints were disposed of within the stipulated time period as mentioned by the statutes, which has created a doubt amongst the student community over the functioning of the officials to be biased in favor of a particular group."

Rawal demanded that the vice-chancellor stay the current nomination process alleging that some UFR candidates were unfairly disqualified.

According to the Goa University's process, university class representatives are first elected from the class representatives elected by various colleges across the state. From these representatives, university faculty representatives are elected to stand for each of the departments of the varsity. The faculty representatives then elect the executive committee of the university student's council and its chairperson.
