Kolkata, Aug 21 (IANS): Adding to the latest trend of edible rakhis, how about onion rakhis? Or fancy a kg of onions as a memorable rakhi gift for your sister? The buzz on social networking sites shows that onion bulbs are much in demand as rakhi gifts.

Posts show a morphed rakhi with an onion, and brothers handing over a bag of onions have been hogging the limelight on Facebook.

"I am seriously considering giving onions to my sister as her rakhi gift, since it's very expensive and it shall bring tears of joy to my sister's eyes..(LoL :D)

For sisters, the message is clear - "Apne Bhai Ko Pyaaz Ki Rakhi Bandho" (Tie an onion rakhi on your brother's wrist); and the brothers get this message: "A bag of onions will bring tears of joy" one message in bright, italicised purple font reads.

For sisters who want to drag their much-loved brothers to a shop to buy a gift, the sabzi mandi (grocer's) could just prove the right idea.

"My sisters want me to accompany them on a shopping spree... I think this year I will take them to a sabzi mandi! hehe onions for them... no diamonds!," one post said.

Rakhi revellers this year, for a change, appear to be set on splurging on onions, at a time when the value of the rupee has been dipping against the US dollar, and the price of onions has been sky-rocketing.
