Millionaire editor turned street-sleeper offered shelter by couple

MUMBAI, Aug 20 (PTI): Sixty-five-year-old Sunita Naik, former editor of Marathi magazine 'Grihalaxmi', who was living on the pavement outside a local gurdwara here for the past two months, has been offered shelter by a couple.

"I no longer live on the footpath, outside the gurdwara. I have found shelter with the couple - Gregory and Christine Misquitta - at their Vile Parle home," Naik told PTI.

The Misquitas learnt about her plight from media reports and offered help, after being informed that she was staying at Versova outside the Aram Nagar Gurdwara for the last two months.

"I am happy here," she said. The couple brought her home along with her Pomeranian dog, her constant companion for the past 12 years.

It is difficult to gauge from her present state that she was once a rich and independent woman who owned two apartments in Worli and a bungalow in Pune.

"I once had over Rs 50 lakh in my account. I don't know where it all went. I suspect one of my employees usurped my money," she said.

Earlier story :

SHOCKING: A millionaire editor Sunita Naik turns a pauper on Mumbai streets!

Mumbai, Aug 20 (Mid-day): If you are walking on the footpath on JP Road in Versova, then you might come across an elderly woman sitting just outside the gurudwara Sachkhand Darbar. Mumbaiites, used to seeing thousands of penniless men, women and children on the streets, could well mistake her for just another beggar.

But then she doesn’t beg. And penniless she maybe, but illiterate she is certainly not. In fact, 65-year old Sunita Naik speaks fluently in not one but five languages. What then is she doing sitting on the footpath in dirty, unwashed clothes, with a packet of stale food and a broken cell phone for company?

Naik has made the footpath outside the gurudwara her home for the last two months, along with her pet, a 12-year-old Pomeranian, named Sashi. “I lost both my parents at a very early age, but with encouragement from friends I managed to graduate from Pune University on merit and worked my way up to become an editor with a Marathi magazine called Grihalakshmi, which had its office in Girgaum. It shut down a few years back,” she told SUNDAY MiD DAY.

In her heydays, Naik was far from being a pauper. In fact on current valuation, she would have been a millionaire many times over. During the early 1980s, in the prime of her career, she bought two apartments in the plush Jayant apartments near Century Bazaar in Worli. In fact she used to live in apartments 22-23 till as recently as 2007.

She also inherited a family bungalow in Pune. She never travelled in public transport and society neighbours at Jayant Apartments remember her chauffer driving her around in either one of her two cars. “In 1984, I sold my bungalow on Bhandar Road in Pune for Rs 6 lakhs. In 2007, I sold both my flats in Worli, along with my two cars -- a Hyundai Ascent and an Indica. I received Rs 80 lakh in the deal and moved in to a leased bungalow in Thane.

But soon I realised that my funds were drying up mysteriously. So I came to Versova, looking for a cheaper flat on rent but finally ended up on the footpath, living off the charity of the gurudwara. They are nice people and have allowed me to stay under a makeshift pandal on the road. They also give me food,” Naik said.

The senior citizen says she has no idea how her bank balance shrunk or if anyone, is behind the crime. “I have no clue about it. Maybe my ex-employee Kamal Raikar, who lives in a small room in Bai Mahalin, Tardeo knows as she used to operate my bank accounts, maybe she can throw some light on the matter. She also looked after me for the past 15 years. But I have no way of contacting her, as I have lost all my contacts after my mobile phone got drenched in the rain,” she said, pointing to her cell phone, which has water floating in the screen.

Not all gloom and doom

Thankfully for Naik, she has friends and well wishers. She admitted that she had received offers from friends and strangers to accommodate her, but most of them had asked her to get rid of the dog, who is unwell and flea ridden. But Naik is unwilling to dump someone who has been loyal to her for 12 years.

“I am educated and speak five languages, so I don’t mind getting a job and starting my life afresh,” she said, refusing any kind of financial help offered to her by this correspondent.

Mahinder Singh, a senior member of the gurudwara said he was aware of Naik’s plight and had organised two square meals for her every day. “We hope there is someone out there who can help her lead a normal life,” he said.

SMD tracked down Vinod Parker, an old neighbour of Naik at Jayant Apartments, who confirmed that the senior citizen indeed owned flats in the same building. “She was an introvert and would not mix too much with others,” he recalled.

Another senior member of the same building recalled Naik having a chauffeur-driven car. “She led quite an affluent life, but would invariably stay aloof. We completely lost touch with her after she sold off her second floor flats. It is shocking and sad to know that she now lives on a footpath,” he said.

Naik also spoke of actor Brij Bhatnagar, a regular at the Gurudwara, he said, “I would see Naik and her dog near the gurudwara. I take care of all her medical bills and try to meet her as often as possible.” Perhaps there are more good human beings somewhere, who will give Naik another crack at life.

If she was educated, she would have had the brains to think of her old age and invest her money wisely or save some in a fixed deposit. And any educated person will be intelligent enough not to trust people so much that you allow them to operate your accounts etc. I wonder what she used to write in the so called magazine. There are lot of people like this who live foolishly all their lives and then have no where to go when they are old and alone especially educated people!!

It is a common practice among the rich class in India to avoid Income tax, store hard cash/gold. even if this educated lady had kept few lakhs in fixed deposit in bank post office (Most Middle class retired aged people do) she would have been beeter. Any how she is rich and famous she will be helped by many, but other poor destitutes no one will bothers it will never be reported in media

    Dear Stan, Surendra, Reshimi.
The situation what happened to millioinaire Sixty-five-year-old Sunita Naik can happen to anybody. No body knows the future what is stored for us.

But one has to be equally careful in planning our own future.

Bad planning, Keeping all the eggs in one basket,(all asset in liquid cash), over trusting your employee with regard to cash and your assets by giving authority to sign your own papers, all may lead to this type of situation to any person.

Every incident teaches us some lessons.

Mind plays important role in our life, No matter how rich we are or how educated we are,but if we lose control of our mind we will end up with same situation of this lady or it may lead to drastic ends.People say she is introvert this makes very clear that she is having psychological problem due to which she dosen't mix with people and enjoyes remaing aloof. When she came to know her fund is getting redused she should have been discussed the issue with friends or collegues but being introvert she couldn't do that . She must have been thought what others think and tried to deal with the problem by her own which got ended in this way.Actually speaking her problem is not. at all big issue ,bank can easily track the person who is draining her balance. But her to lead a better normal life she had to go through proper counceling and join any social group where she can interact people and this will surly help her to lead better life. Thanks to the people who helped her and thanks to DW publishing this article with life lessons.

Eventhough it's small community, sikhs are famous for charity providing shelter and food to the people who are in trouble/disaster....by setting up 'langar'..!! Looks like she spent her money lavishly during her younger days by not bothering others. Rs.80 lakhs is not a small amount. Just check how poor elderly women's surviving at villages doing odd jobs.. Bad luck/time may strike in one’s life anytime and no one can stop it. But God has given us wisdom how to take care of ourselves. Never overdo or misuse what is proved by God.

The other day I was going through your comments as to the childhood and tough days in life. I too had tough time but had a determination to study. Polishing our mind set is more worth than what we collect (wealth) and adore it.

It means that everything we have belongs to God, and he gives it to us to use for good. We must never believe though that we truly own anything, because He can take it away, not always as a punishment but often because we are treating things as if they are more important than Him, or we are not using them for the reasons we are supposed to.

People must educate themselves - How to earn, how to spend and how to save.
When she was in her peak she earned , and saved (1 bungalow, 2 flats and cash) but she was not knowing how to spend. Excessive spending can be controlled by judiciously monitoring where and how you spend your hard-earned money, and taking steps to consciously limit and control that spending. Controlling your spending doesn't mean you must do without. It simply means that you plan the most important expenditures and take steps to ensure you're sticking to that plan. When there was no income she sold her properties and she was paying rent of RS 35000/- per month. I feel she is responsible for her present fate.

Down to Pavement in JP road Versova?
Mumbai amazes indeed. For an equal number of rags to riches story there's an equal riches to rags saga. There's another amazing story
    attached to 'Mumbai'. That's this.
A man never sleeps hungry there.Whatever may be his situation, if he continues to fight on, he will find food at least 'once' a day. This I write from my own experience.
There's a moral in any story though. What does this story teach you? That is you take nothing for granted.Trust yourself the best.Try your best to help whosoever when you are in a position to, for you never know whose help you may need one fine day.
