Remove sirens from vehicles of VIPs: SC

New Delhi, Aug 19 (PTI): The Supreme Court today asked the Centre and the states to remove sirens from vehicles of VIPs as it is in violation of law and indicated that it would pass a direction for preventing misuse of red beacon also, observing that their use was a "reflection of British Raj".

A bench of justices G S Singhvi and V Gopala Gowda questioned why these facilities are given to ministers, bureaucrats and politicians when P Chidambaram had refused to have them when he was the Home Minister.

"It is so paradoxical. P Chidambram who was the Home Minister said that he did not need escort and siren for his vehicle. It was the functional requirement of Home Minister but he said he did not need anything," it said.

The court refused the plea of the governments seeking four weeks' more time to put in place rules for preventing their misuse and said that it would pass direction.

"You are mocking at court's proceedings. We have given you enough time. Why did you not strike down notification in violation of Rule 108 of Central Motor Vehicles Act.

The miffed court went on to say, "People are the masters. They pay taxes and elect their representatives. Why they should not be given red beacon and siren."

"We are intending to strike down notifications. You have to ensure that all sirens are removed... It is a reflection of the British Raj," the bench said indicating that all notification of the Centre and states would be quashed as they are in violation of the Act.

"Why should we not strike down notification of the state governments for allowing red beacon on vehicles carrying high dignitaries," the bench observed while pointing out that there are states which have put all Ministers, MLAs and bureaucrats under the category of high dignitaries.

It said that only people holding constitutional posts be given red beacon and questioned the Centre for giving siren facilities to Supreme Court judges.

"We have noticed thousand times that vehicles cross the red light when the vehicle is fitted with beacon and siren," the bench said.

I have another thought in my mind.
Laugh if you feel, or ignore.
Very soon the general public will start stoning these rascals. We do not need SC,HC, any more. Only people's court. In that scenario the siren is needed, in fact more louder, so that people will know from distance and get ready with stones & iron rods.
This day is not too far away.!!!!

This rule must be implemented in all over India, I am in middle east but I have not seen any of our rulers/ministers are using special No. Plates in their cars or sirens/red light or any special security during any time. They may use it during only official visits to show that they are rulers.
In India I have seen car number plates as former president of Bangalore( Bar Krishnappa) municipality etc with red light. These are Bad politicians are sent to parliaments by good people who don't vote. When they get their place they will show their power.

This decision should have been given much earlier. Whats the use in installing a siren to VIPs vehicles. Its sheer nuisance to public. We feel sometimes that some Ambulance is passing through the road. The VIPs should go like ordinary persons.Anyway better late than never. The SC has given right decision at right time.

Absolutely correct, do not make mockery of British rule. We got independence, be happy. On the other hand they taught us how to live with dignity.
Talking about sirens and beacon lights?!!!our ministers, MLA's, MP's don't need all this, I suggest and they deserve 3 donkeys in front and 3 pigs behind.

Very good move,Kudos to the Supreme Court for taking this matter with the highest level of seriousness. Still if someone wants the Siren then Put at their Head or at their Back. They can pick between the two.
