Govt bans import of flat screen televisions by air travellers

New Delhi, Aug 19 (PTI) : The government today banned duty- free import of flat screen television by air travellers in a bid to prop up rupee, which declined below the 63 level against US dollar.

The government, according to a notification, has decided to "disallow import of flat panel (LCD/LED/Plasma) television as part of free baggage allowance" with effect from August 26.
Air travellers currently can bring a flat screen television for personal use without paying any duty.

This would mean air travellers bring in TV as part of the baggage from August 26 would have to pay customs duty.

In a order to contain the Current Account Deficit (CAD) and arrest declining value of rupee, the government has raised duty on gold, platinum and silver to 10 per cent.

Finance Minister P Chidambaram had said that steps would be taken to compress import of non-essential goods.

The value of rupee touched all-time low of 63.30 to a dollar in the afternoon trade.

It will have no effect on rich people, the poor people will not bother much, ultimately the middle class will suffer with such kind of government policies. What will be the gross gain to stabilize Indian currency against dollar by implementing such rules? If only the politicians stop looting the government funds, India can come out from such crises. The dream of many people to bring home a LCD/LED TV for cheaper price from abroad is shattered.

when best brand TV's and other goods are available in Indian market then why get it from abroad. Not just on TV's, govt should impose heavy duty on import of all such items. i even feel the govt should go a step forward and ban certain foreign products from Indian markets till the rupee stabilizes. everyone of us will share posts on social networking sites suggesting methods to boost rupee. @ JOY CASTELINO, MOODUBELLE/DUBAI - you are wrong.. in fact India should encourage NRIs and other Indians who are living abroad to send money back home. The more money they send, India will have more foreign currency reserves. Like if you send money from Dubai to your relatives in India then it will help India to increase its dollar reserve. Since dollar & dirham has a fixed exchange rate.

India did not suffer much until recently - in the sense that the banking industry was much more stable than in the US. But the market abroad has shaken - decreasing our exports. The major imports for India is crude oil, manufactured goods and minerals - and due to local demand of the population, these did not decrease. So exports decreased but demand didn't (it probably increased due to increase in population) again increasing the trade deficit and the entire demand-supply cycle mentioned above comes into effect.

So, currency exchange rate does not show how big an economy is - India is one of the largest economy in the world. The exchange rate is depended on the demand-supply dynamics of the market. Less the dollar in indian market, more will be its value and that means downfall of rupee because as of today you are paying 64 rupees for 1 dollar.

Will stopping gold imports help the Indian economy?

The answer to this question is simple – no, simply stopping gold imports will not help the Indian economy because a lot of people depend on gold for their livelihood, and they need gold imports to remain in business and survive.

Will slowing down gold imports help? – yes I believe they will help because they wouldn’t be such a big drain on our forex reserves and that will be great.

Will stopping LCD TV imports help the Indian economy????

INDIAN GOVT HAS DONE ALMOST EVERYTHING TO STOP THE DEPRECIATING RUPEE. IT IS NOT THE PROBLEM WITH INDIAN GOVT, BUT WITH THE MARKET ABROAD HAS SHAKEN WHICH HAS GREATLY EFFECTING INDIA

I remember many of my friends needing to pay not just duty but also bribe to bring LCD/LED TV's to India only recently. In any case, this is not the answer to the problem of the falling Rupee. Just about every large investment project is blocked by either the villagers (who want to continue to live in the middle ages) or the activists or the politicians. Not a single progressive bill has been passed by the parliament since years. This is the reason why investors are pulling back from Indian markets - stocks or currency - and deploying them elsewhere. There are plenty of countries in Asia and Africa hungry for capital. We can be happy in our misery.

Shame Shame Shame !!!They are not worried of 10000crores looted in Adarsh scam by CONGRESS, not on 70000crores looted on CWG by CONGRESS, not worried or bothered by the 1,80000 crores they looted by the Coal scam by CONGRESS, Not worried by the 170000 crores looted by CONGRESS ON 2G, but people bringing 10gms of gold or a LED/LCD TV will have an impact on rupee which has already nose dived by their scams not by these small petty money , then why CONGRESS is burdening the common man, poor man, middle income groups & tax payers for their debacle??Next target will be branded panties and other under garments!!! Let these so called economists Harvard university return( i think he might have paid huge money to get degree)

What much difference it will make to control the fall of Rupee against Dollar? If the ministers stop their personal corruption for at least a month, they can bring back the economy to the track.Real truth is they can if they really want to a change.

Chiddu Bhai, first try to find out the source of crores of rupees in black money circulated in India (Ex. caught in truks in Mumbai and recently in Karnataka)& then try to catch the tail of Elephant while the Elephant is passing without any ones notice. High time Indian ECONOMIST & STRATEGIST to take big leap, if they believe in this!

Chidambram & team should wait at the convey belts of the airport to check how many Flat screens are carried by travelers. Even if 1% of the travelers do carry 90% of them get out paying bribe!

Clean up guys and have a decent fiscal policies. Think beyond...

The Main Reason for down fall of Rupees is - Illegal Money and Corruption in th ecountry.Politicians are looting the country.People must open thier eyes and Awake. In India Money Is with the Politicians, Film Stars and Cricketers..Its Very Hard to earn the leaven Bread to the common Man.All rich Poeple Enjoys at the cost of Poor Citizens.Ban Illegal mining, take possesion of Government lands which are with Politicians, collect the tax( But tax officials attacks only minor defected tax Payers).Tax the criecketers(high Profile) as they are getting every thing Free of charge.(They Get adverstisement, Regaulr salry form the Board and Gifts from the various Enterprenures). Thene can say jai hoa.
