Udupi: Assault drives woman to suicide, husband jailed for three years

Udupi, Aug 18: The district court has sentenced a man to three years of imprisonment for repeatedly assaulting his wife, due to which she eventually committed suicide. The court also imposed a fine of Rs. 3,000.
The accused is identified as Narayan Harijan, resident of Pilimande village, Mudkur of Karkala.
District judge BM Angadi pronounced the judgment. Lawyer TS Jithuri had fought on behalf of the victim's family.
The accused used to pick frequent fights questioning her fidelity. On June 30, 2012, Narayan in a drunken stupor kicked his wife as she was feeding her child and physically assaulted her, stated the complaint.
Unable to bear the daily torture, Savitha immolated herself using kerosene. She was rushed to the hospital with the help of neighbors. However, on July 13, she succumbed to the injuries and passed away.
Karkala rural police station sub-inspector M Achuth Gowda submitted a chargesheet to the court after conducting investigation on the case. Based on the findings and evidence, the court sentenced Narayan to three years of imprisonment and penalty.
