Udupi: Sorake lists out development projects at I-Day celebrations

Udupi, Aug 15: The district witnessed colourful celebrations marking the 67th Independence Day on Thursday August 15.
District incharge minister Vinay Kumar Sorake hoisted the national flag and received the guard of honour.
In his address, Sorake said, "Unity, integrity and fraternity are the hallmark of our culture. We have people of all religions living in harmony here. We should respect all people, only then can we lead a peaceful life. This is an occasion to remember the sacrifices of our great leaders
"Transperant, corruption-free and efficient administration under able leadership form the base of Congress government," he said, adding that Udupi is an example of harmony where people of various religions live together peacefully.
Listing out a string of development and welfare programmes undertaken by the government, he said, "Under Anna Bhagya scheme, rice is being distributed at Re 1. In Udupi, there are 18,466 Antyodaya card holders and 94,845 BPL card holders. The process of transferring of APL to BPL among deserving families is on.
"Under Ksheera Bhagya scheme, 33,816 children between the ages of 6 months to 3 years, 18,901 childnre between 3-6 years have been given milk three days a week at a cost of Rs 6 crore," he added.
He also said that Udupi will soon be declared a heritage city and work in this regard is going on. Roads of seven tourism places will be developed at a cost of Rs 700 lac, Sorake said. The Naxal affected areas will be granted Rs 7 crore for development.
"The third phase of Malpe port development is going on, and Rs 37.15 crore will be released for this project," he said. Also, to tackle sea erosion, Rs 2.75 crore will be alloted to construct a permanent wall.
In another significant announcement, he said that the Brahmavar sugar factory will be converted into horticulture university.
On the national highway widening work, he said an interlink project connecting Manipal - Hiriadka - Karkala - Dharmasthala - Gundya is in progress, and so also Hiriadka - Shirva road connecting Bajpe airport.
The Congress government has also started the work on legalizing government land encroached by the poor, by which 12,000 poor people are expected to benefit, he said, adding that the housing schemes will benefit 4,288 people.
A sum of Rs 42.50 crore has been alloted for drinking water scheme in rural development programme, and 2,367 houses will avail this facility, he said. Also, Rs 1013 lac has been alloted to develop rural roads.
Koti-Chennayya theme park will be developed at a cost of Rs 5 crore, he said.
Brahmavar ASI Sheena Poojary was felicitated on the occasion.
March past by 20 teams and colourful cultural dance were the highlights of the celebration.
