Mangalore: Formation of youth wing, help for needy kids mark SSVP jubilee celebration

Mangalore, Aug 12: Commemorating the silver jubilee celebration of the Society of St Vincent De Paul (SSVP), the St Francis Assisi area council, Mangalore, formed a new youth wing of SVDP, and also took the responsibility of as many as 25 economically poor students to assist in their educational needs and provide other benefits.
On the jubilant occasion, Bishop of Mangalore Dr Aloysius Paul D’Souza symbolically handed over prayer books to the 25 students, at a programme held at Guardian Angel Church hall here on Sunday August 11.
Addressing the audience which comprised largely the members of SSVP, representatives from various parishes and donors, Bishop of Mangalore said, “The association is known for its service to the poor. The decision to take the responsibility to look after the needs of the poor children and formation of youth wing deserves all praise. I salute your work.
"Today, the concern for the poor is decreasing due to competition. But, SSVP goes in search of the poor. This is its spirit. The church recognizes and respects your work,” he said, adding, “This work is not easy, and SSVP does it silently.”
Spiritual director of SSVP Fr Francis D’Souza said, “We are known as the messengers of peace. This is what even SSVP intends to do along with the service of the poor and underprivileged. This is the mission the church has given to all us."
Parish priest of Anjelore Church Fr Matthew Vas who also spoke on the occasion said, “Love the poor and help them grow along with you.”
The SSVP association members belonging to Bondel Church were felicitated with a memento for having the highest number of members in the association.
Lavina presented the report of programmes organized by SSVP association over the 25 years. All those who were part of the association and had served for more than 25 years were felicitated on the occasion.
As part of the bi-centenary birth anniversary of B L Frederic Ozanam, founder of SSVP, the bishop and the dignitaries paid a floral tribute. To mark the occasion, the bishop released a souvenir.
Regional council president and coordinator of the programme Sunil Vas welcomed and Joachim D’Souza proposed a vote of thanks. Manu Bantwal was the emcee for the programme. Central council member Albert Sequeira was present on the dais.
