Mangalore: Wenlock to get new multi-speciality wing - Khadar

Mangalore, Aug 9: There are plans to start a new a 250-bed multi-speciality unit at Wenlock hospital and increase the number of beds from 704 to 1,000 in the present hospital, said minister for health and family welfare U T Khadar.
He was addressing a meeting after his visit to Wenlock hospital with a team of officials from Bangalore here on Thursday August 8. The team inspected the hospital in view of the requirements needed to uprgrade the hospital.
He also said that the emergency unit of the hospital will also be upgraded. He asked the team to give more priority to ventilator facility, upgrading of surgery unit, establishment of hi-tech lab, better mortuary, cancer centre, psychiarty ward, prisoners' cell and so on.
Khadar said that based on the report submitted by the team, appropriate steps will be taken to upgrade the hospital in the lines of Bangalore's Arogya Bhavan. It has also been decided to grant facility of 1 ambulance for every 50,000 to 60,000 people, he said.
Polyclinics in Mangalore and Ullal
With the aim of reducing pressure on district hospital and to provide free medical facilities to people of all walks of life, the state health department has decided to open two multi-specialty hospitals in MCC limits and Ullal TMC, said U T Khadar.
It has been decided to establish a polyclinic at a cost of Rs 9.5 crore in Ullal TMC and worth Rs 20 crore in MCC limits. This is one of the ambitious projects of the central government and plans are also afoot to open a polyclinic at Bangalore, Bagalkot and Mysore," he said.
Addressing the mediapersons at a press meet on Thursday August 8, he said, "It has been decided to establish a polyclinic at a cost of Rs 9.5 crore in Ullal TMC and worth Rs 20 crore in MCC limits. This is one of the ambitious projects of the central government and plans are also afoot to open a polyclinic at Bangalore, Bagalkote and Mysore," he said.
Staff in the polyclinics will be hired on contract basis and these will have a paediatric, gynecologist, orthopedic and physician and also a good lab testing facility. All polyclinics will be computerised, so that patients can get their reports online. A team from National Health Mission has arrived in the district to survey Ullal and Mangalore City, he said.
When asked about the derogatory remarks made by the Assembly speaker against Rani Abakka, minister Khadar said, "I was not present during his statement and hence the matter has not come to my notice. Organizing a protest against it is of no use, instead, it is important to tell him about the achievement of freedom fighter Rani Abakka."
Another hospital at Vamanjoor
As the number of patients coming to district Wenlock hospital has increasing, the pressure is more. In order to reduce this, there is proposal of building a well-equipped hospital at Vamanjoor. Already land has been identified for this, said minister Khadar.
MLA J R Lobo, Dr Ananth Narayan, nodal officer of national rural health campaign, Nischith, local leaders Eshwar Ullal, Santhosh Kumar Shetty among others were present.
