Karkala, Aug 6: At a time when cattle thefts and their illegal slaughtering are being reported every other day, here is an instance where humanity was at its best in rescuing an abandoned, injured bullock and providing it food, medical care and shelter. The incident took place near court road in Karkala.
The bullock was wandering around in the area with its injured leg for the last 15 days. Soloman Alva who saw the bullock, fell pity on its condition and informed Daijiworld correspondent.
Daijiworld correspondent brought the incident to the notice of the tahsildar office. In response, as per the order of second grade tahsildar Manikya, veterinary doctor Nagaraj Balegar was called to the spot.
Staff of anti-Naxal force, social worker Henry Santumayor, Solomon Alva, councilor Prakash Rao, animal welfare officer Ravi Shetty and others helped to carry the bullock to a shed belonging to industrialist Karla Shivaram Shetty. Also, the Bajrang members were informed and they too helped in shifting the animal.
There is no proper system made by the local Karkala municipality regarding preservation and protection of cattle. "It is the duty of the municipality to take steps against nomadic and sick cattle. It is due to the negligence of the owners that cattle are found in public places and only municipality has right to take action," said one of the locals.
If cattle are found in public places, there is a system where cattle owners have to pay fine and take back their cattle from the cowshed owned by municipality. By following this system, the municipality has to bear huge expenses as it has to spend Rs 100 per cow per day, apart from labour cost.
