Mangalore, Jan 31: The ‘Martyrs’ Day’, marking the death anniversary of the Father of the Nation was organized by the Mahatma Gandhi Peace Foundation here on Monday January 30.

Addressing the gathering, Prof Amrith Someshwar, eminent litterateur, scholar and researcher, stated that religious meets should be transparent and should not be aimed at publicity and one should respect and honour other religions. He raised a question on the minimal attendance for the meet saying that only the members belonging to the organizing community were present, but not the people belonging to other religions.

He added that India would be a much better nation today, had it followed Gandhian principals.

B A Mohammed Haneef, advocate, opined that people remembering Gandhi today are not large in number, and that Gandhi was a true Hindu who also respected other religions of the world.

K Purushottam Shetty, president of the foundation, presided over the meet. Also present was Fr Francis Serrao, rector, St Aloysius Institutions.
