Udupi: Tragedy at Katapady - Couple charred to death in fire incident

Udupi, Aug 6: In a tragic incident, a couple at Katapady Beedu house were charred to death after a room in the house caught fire. The incident took place at around 7 am on Tuesday August 6.
The deceased have been identified as Vijay Shetty (48) and his wife Chandrika Shetty (38). Vijay Shetty was employed at Navayuga Constructions as a supervisor.
The cause for the fire has not yet been ascertained, though unconfirmed sources said that the couple might have committed suicide. However, there are no reports of any clashes, misunderstandings or financial problems in the family.
At the time of the incident, Vijay's mother and the couple's daughter Jyotsna, studying in first PUC, were in the house, however, they escaped unhurt as they were in another room.
The house is well known and has a long history. Kambala is also organized in the surroundings of the house.
The fire personnel reached the spot at around 7.45 am, but by then both Vijay and Chandrika had breathed their last. The room they were in was completely gutted in the fire.
District incharge minister Vinay Kumar Sorake, former MLA Lalaji Mendon, Congress block president Naveenchandra Shetty and others visited the spot.
Additional SP Santosh Kumar, DySP Jayant Shetty, circle inspector Shivanand Walekar, Kaup SI Archana and other police personnel arrived and conducted preliminary investigation.
Forensic team from KMC Manipal were also called.
Furhter investigations are on. As the news spread, over 500 people rushed to the spot.
