Kundapur, Aug 4: They work day and night so that we may sleep peacefully in our houses, but when it comes to their own comfort, the police, at least in Kundapur, are at the receiving end.
The police quarters located behind Kundapur police station near New Bus Stand is in a poor condition, to say the least. The quarters, built 20 years ago, has been completely damaged due to poor maintenance.
In these quarters, including the house for inspector and sub inspector, there are altogether 41 houses out of which 13 houses are completely damaged. In 10 houses, police families live with great difficulty but other houses are in a poor condition.
Continuous problems
The problems faced by police officials’ families is continuous. One of the major problems is leakage—if the top floor house uses water in the bathroom, then it will enter the house right below it.
This condition is worse during the rainy season. Adding to this, the rain water enters the room. The doors of a few houses are completely broken. People still live here as they are helpless.
In connection to the repair and maintenance of the house, from the past 20 years, the government has released funds from Rs 25,000 to Rs 2 lac but so far no work has been carried out with that money. It is said that the official in charge for repair and maintenance prepares false bills and claims the money and this incident came to light lately.
According to some people, it is not at all possible to repair the present quarters as it is damaged to that extent. Hence, building new quarters is the best option, they said. About 25 cents of land belonging to the department lies vacant next to the house of the sub inspector. Even after that, the question is why the department is not giving them basic facilities.
