Mangalore, Aug 3: In the wake of increasing cases of cattle theft, the city police commissioner has been asked to form a special squad to hunt down the thieves and prevent such incidents, said Mangalore North MLA Mohiuddin Bava.
Speaking to reporters on Friday August 2, he condemned cattle theft and said, "Because of such thieves, families that depend on cattle for their livelihood and sustenance are put in great difficulty. Police have been instructed to arrest the culprits at the earliest."
He further said, "There is no question of protecting the culprits for any reason whatsoever. Acts that attempt to disrupt peace and communal harmony in district will not be tolerated.
"There has been allegation that I have been giving protection to cattle thieves. This is utterly false. I have already put pressure on police to arrest the culprits immediately," he said.
"Discussions will be held with the police regarding increase in security at night," he added.
"There have been complaints about illegal slaughter houses running in various places, and appropriate action will be taken against them," he assured.
Meanwhile, the Vishwa Hindu Parishat (VHP) held a protest at Suratkal slamming the Congress government for playing vote bank politics and not implementing blanket ban on cow slaughter.
VHP vice-president M B Puranik said that during the BJP government's regime, when efforts were made to tighten law against cow slaughter, the governor had refused to pass any resolution for political gain. "Ever since Congress formed the government, instances of cattle theft and slaughter have increased alarmingly," he said.
Minorities Yuva Morcha vice-president Franklin Monteiro and others were present.
