Kundapur: Storm wreaks havoc in taluk, loss worth crores estimated

Kundapur, Aug 1: It has been reported that the storm in the wee hours of Thursday Augist 1 caused large scale destruction in the taluk, including in the rural area.
The storm which originated in Navunda at about 1 am, proceeded towards east to Shankeranarayana, Halady and Belve finally decreasing in velocity a little further from Albady Adarle.
The storm has uprooted several trees and electric poles on the national highway causing darkness in the area. The exact amount of loss could not be ascertained due to bad weather and darkness.
Nearly thirty houses and sheds were damaged in the storm, besides rubber and other plantations.
The roof of the house and the shed of Deepika S Shetty, taluk panchayat president, flew away during the storm. Nearly four hundred rubber plants, a pump shed and an engine is destroyed. Several uprooted trees could be seen on the roads.
The loss could be more than several crores of rupees, it is said.
In Kodi too heavy winds created havoc everywhere, uprooting several coconut trees and causing damage to houses.
Over 10 coconut trees were uprooted near Kodi Chakramma Temple due to the strong winds. Trees also fell on houses, causing heavy loss.
The house belonging to Babu Poojary was destroyed after a large mango tree fell on it. The house was constructed recently. Luckily, no injury was reported.
Coconut trees fell on houses belonging to Girija S Putran and other locals. Several electricity poles were dislocated affecting power supply in Kodi. Prliminary reports suggested that the total loss could well be over Rs 6 lac. Fire personnel and police took up the relief work.
Chief officer of town municipal Sadanand B C, taluk panchayat member Manju Billawa, BJP local unit president Rajesh Kaveri and others visited the spot.
