Mangalore, Aug 1: Bantwal rural police station sub-inspector Mahesh Prasad deposed before the second additional district and sessions court here on Wednesday July 31 in connection to an atrocity case filed by a woman in Bantwal.
According to police sources, a woman had filed the atrocity case in 2010 in the Bantwal rural police station. The court had ordered the police to submit documents and produce witnesses pertaining to the case, and had also directed the police inspector to appear in person.
However, Mahesh Prasad failed to honour the court order and was later issued show-cause notice. But again he did not appear in court, and finally the court issued a warrant against him.
This time, Mahesh Prasad appeared in court, but without producing necessary documents or witnesses for the case. Angered by this, the judge remanded him in 14 days of judicial custody for dereliction of duty.
However, sources said that higher officials of the police department intervened and with the help of the public prosecutor managed to secure him bail the same evening. Mahesh Prasad was let off with a stern warning, and sources said that he was released in view of his official duty.
Mahesh Prasad reportedly said that the case in Bantwal rural police station was filed by the woman before he assumed charge there.
