Bangalore, Jan 27: The Konkani Samudai, Bangalore held their Christmas and New Year get-together on Republic Day, January 26, 2006 in the Christa Prabhalaya Parish Hall, Jayanagar. The programme began at 4.00 p.m. with a Holy Mass in Konkani, Frs. V J Menezes and Pascal Cutinho being the celebrants. Fr Menezes in his homily advised the congregation to adopt konkani language in daily affairs and thus encourage the Konkani culture, especially among the children.
After light refreshments, the cultural programme began with a welcome by president Frank Madtha. He expressed happiness over the fact that though the organization was only six months old, the membership which was only 10 families initially, had already crossed 300, which explains the big stride made by the Samudai. Briefing on the future activities, he said that the two main motives were to help the aged and the lonely who are confined to homes, and to aid the poor and deserving students who were in need of financial assistance.
Talent contests were held for various age groups in fancy dress, dancing and singing in solo and groups. Over 100 contestants, from age 3 to 78 years participated and vied with each other. A surprise event, a beauty contest, washeld and Seema Fernandes was crowned "Miss Konkani Samudai - 2006". The programme was dotted with humorous skits to entertain the audience.
Appearance of Santa Claus not only cheered the children, but also brought the Christmas spirit to the adults. Naveen Rodrigues and Ivy Saldanha compered the event in a lively manner. The programme concluded around 10.15 pm with a vote of thanks by secretary Lawrence Saldanha.
