Illegal gas cylinders seized
Mangalore, Jul 26: The tahsildar and the Mangalore rural police also raided a house in Garodi here and arrested a man who was selling gas cylinders illegally.
The accused has been identified as Taranath (50).
He was caught refilling gas cylinders which he planned to sell for a price lower than market value.
The operation was carried out by tahsildar Shivappa Lamani and Mangalore rural police.
The police seized 16 cylinders of 15.6 kg and 14.2 kg each, 22 cylinders each weighing 5 kg, three HP motors, two weighing scales and five empty cylinders. The cylinders belonged to Indane Gas and Bharat Gas companies.
Speaking to daijiworld, tahsildar Lamani said that police received intimation about the illegal cylinder business carried out by Taranath and thus conducted the raid.
As many as 13 gas connections were found in his name, the tahsildar said, adding that an inquiry will be done by roping in the food and civil supplies department which would have issued the connections.
Though Taranath said that he had been doing this illegal business for 7 to 8 months, the tahsildar said that it must have been going on for the past one or two years.
"This is not only illegal but also dangerous. The neighbours or locals should have informed us, but they did not do so," he said.
Taranath was selling each cylinder for Rs 490, while the subsidized market rate is Rs 520.
Illegal sand transportation - Police seize 17 trucks
In a major haul, police have seized 17 trucks transporting sand illegally, mostly to Bangalore from here.
The trucks were seized at a spot behind Kannur mosque here on Friday July 26.
It is said that none of the trucks had permit. Each truck would fetch Rs 50,000 for transporting sand to Bangalore, sources said.
The operation was carried out by tahsildar and Mangalore rural police.
Speaking to daijiworld, tahsildar Shivappa Lamani said that the operation was carried out based on specific information received in the morning. Most of the trucks were transporting sand to Bangalore, while some others to local places.
The officials of mines department will be informed and investigation will be done with their help, he said.
The trucks were shifted to Mangalore rural police station.
A case has been registered and investigation is on.
