Panaji, Jul 24 (IANS): All the five major dams in Goa are either full or are nearing the danger level with monsoon rain continuing across the state for the last three weeks, an official said here Tuesday.

The water level in dams at Selaulim, Anjunem, Chapoli, Panchwadi and Amthane have crossed last year's mark, an official of the state water resources department said.

"The water level in Selaulim (dam), from where water is supplied to most of South Goa district, has reached 42.88 metres against its capacity of 42 metres," the official said, adding that the level in Panchawadi dam has also exceeded its water holding capacity.

The torrential rain forced the authorities to open two gates of the Anjunem dam, which is the tallest among the five in Goa.

"We have opened two barrier gates in order to ease the pressure against the dam walls. It is a regular procedure," the official said.

The Met Office has forecast more rain in Goa in the next few days. The state recorded 70 inches of rainfall till Monday.
