Kasargod, Jul 23: In a curious incident, gas containers were washed ashore at the beach at Shiriya in Kumble.
The containers were noticed by the fishermen who informed the police.
Rather amusingly, there were fears that there might have been a bomb planted on them, and hence no one dared to go too near. There was also fear that they might explode.
The bomb squad arrived at the spot and inspected, but there is no report of anything suspicious being found. The coastal security police and firemen too arrived.
As per information on the containers, they had a capacity to hold 24,000 litre of refridgerated gas. However, it has not been ascertained whether they were empty or contained the gas at the time of discovery.
Officials of a gas company were informed and they are expected to inspect the containers.
As soon as the news spread, scores of curious visitors flocked to the beach to have a glimpse of the tankers.
It may be mentioned here that a few years ago, barrels containing liquor had been been found in Kanhangad. Some of the people who had taken home a share of the liquor and consumed it, had later died.
A few days back, items like refridgerators and football were found by fishermen in sea off Kasargod coast. There is still no information as to where these items came from. It is now learnt that the intelligence wing has stepped into carry on the investigation and find out the source, as there is suspicion that some banned organizations may have a hand. The coast guard, despite persistent efforts, have not been able to ascertain where the items came from or who threw them into the sea, and hence the help of the intelligence wing has been sought.
