Beltangady, Jul 23: The people belonging to Kalenja post office area of Nelyadi here had shock of their life when some of them noticed that important postal letters like insurance premiums, bonds, cheques, telegrams, love letters, and many others were lying among bushes and had become soggy due to heavy rains.
Postman Kushalappa who took the easy way out and ended up throwing precious letters in the bushes, was caught by the villagers and handed over to auhorities, who suspended him from duty.
When people noticed these letters in the bushes, they complained to the postal authority. Postal officials who inspected the area admitted the mistake committed by the postman, but had no answer to the postal letters which were destroyed due to rains. Some letters were recovered and delivered to the people concerned, but many more are suspected to be misplaced.
Villagers had once complained to the authorities about postman Kushalappa who was said to be not prompt in his duty and also reportedly inebriated during duty hours. But no action had been taken against him.
Speaking to media, Udaya Kumar said that Kushalappa has been suspended from duty and alternate arrangements have been made to deliver the letters on daily basis, but if any important letter has got misplaced, the postal authority cannot be responsible because important documents should not be sent through normal post.
People also suspect that Kushalappa must have been doing this from a long time, as some people never received their letters sent by relatives or others.
