Bangalore, Jul 21: The by-elections for Bangalore Rural and Mandya Lok Sabha constituencies will be held on August 21, the chief election commission has announced. The seats were left vacant after the resignation of state JD(S) president H D Kumaraswamy (Bangalore rural) and Cheluvaraya Swamy (Mandya) from their MP posts.
H D Kumarswamy and Cheluvaraya Swamy had submitted their resignation from the posts after they were elected as members of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) in the last state election.
“The notification for the by-polls will be issued on July 21. The last date to file nomination is on August 3 and the scrutiny of nominations will take place on August 5,” a release stated.
The last date to withdraw the nomination is August 7. The polling will be held on August 21 between 8 am and 5 pm and the counting of votes will be on August 24.
The code of conduct in both the constituencies shall come into force with immediate effect, the release further stated.
Matter of prestige for Congress
This is the first Lok Sabha by-election scheduled to be held after the new Congress government took charge of the state.
Earlier, the JD(S) had won the MP seats in both the constituencies. The election is seen as a matter of prestige for the ruling Congress government.
As soon as the time-table of Lok Sabha election was announced, opposition leader of the state Assembly H D Kumaraswamy set the party's ball rolling to try and get the seats back in JD(S) fold.
On the other hand, the recent clash between Mandya district Congress president Athmananda and district incharge minister Ambareesh may prove costly for the party.
