Moodbidri, Jan 24: A rare case of a cow giving birth to two calves was reported from the house of Edward Rebello, a farmer at Taccode near here.
When this reporter visited him, he proudly posed with the animals and commented in Tulu 'Dever korinaklege korpini' (God gives only to those who already have). But observing Edward's hard work and dedication as a result of which he has developed his farm, one is led to believe that God gives only to those who work hard.
Having given up studies at seventh-standard level, Edward kept helping his parents in agriculture. He now owns a small farm in an area of 2.5 acres.
Edward, fondly addressed 'Eddu' in close circles, has been featured on ETV in its ‘Krishi’ (agriculture) programme. He is a regular contributor to the popular ‘Adike Patrike’ monthly of Puttur with his tips and suggestions on agriculture. He is an active member of ‘Krishi Vinimaya Kendra’ here, and has gone on tour of north India as well as south India tour under the auspices of the Milk Society. He has been recognized by the DK Co-operative Milk Federation and is the director of Taccode Milk Society.
Edward is a passionate plant-lover and a vegetarian, and owns a garden containing flowers and fruits of different varieties. The garden has 50 varieties of roses, 3 varieties of rambutan, varieties of cashew, jackfruit, mangoes and 25 other varieties of rare trees and plants.
Edward’s farm has many visitors and study groups coming every week.
Edward’s mother Elizabeth with wife Florine and children, support him in his endeavours and experiments.
