Carry-over system: Polytechnic students meet MLA

Udupi, Jul 20: Students of various polytechnic colleges in Udupi submitted a memorandum to MLA Pramod Madhwaraj demanding implementation of the carry-over system in line with that of degree colleges.

Students appealed that they want a final decision to be taken soon in their favour so that they could carry over the subjects in which they fail to the next year, similar to all degree courses. They stated that their future and careers depended on it.

According to the present system, only the students who have failed in less than four subjects can go to the next semester. On September 17, 2012, the government ordered that students could also go to the next semester  if they failed in ten subjects. But soon the decision was revoked for the year 2013-14 and changed to the previous one.

Pramod Madhwaraj assured the students that he would look into the matter and said that on Monday he would raise the issue in the legislature.

    Let them carry over...diploma will be awarded only on completion....Even course completion cetificate shall not be given....In this case only students suffer and not the institutions...It is better for the institutions to push off the students out of the college within stipulated time and struggle for life to clear back logs....!!!???

    Throughout my professional career I have been "Pro-Education, Pro-Students"

    I have a gentle suggestion to my beloved younger generation. Your diploma or engineering syllabus is as per your age/ basic education and is drafted for you, as per your ability to learn . This syllabus is not above your learning ability. Please consult the pass students if you doubt this sentence.

    Therefore, give up excess usage of internet, social media like FB, cut down your mobile bill and concentrate on learning, which is beneficial to your future. You are too young to advice professionals how schooling should be done. Please do your part that is learning with attention and dedication.

    If carry over system is liberalized, you will soon realize your education may not be recognized out side India, as well as in India. It is advisable that you take a year off the school/ college, do the damage control by clearing pending subjects and go back to school, also you can work during this free time.

    In western countries if a student fail(s) subject(s), they are asked to sit in the class and repeat the failed subject(s) till they pass, and have to pay course fees and other course related expenses.
