Mangalore: Now, gold found concealed in passenger's TV set at Airport

Mangalore, Jul 16: With smuggled gold getting detected in oats, chocolates and even diapers on previous occasions at Mangalore International Airport, some passengers are finding new ways to smuggle the precious metal.

On Monday July 16, a passenger was caught trying to smuggle in gold biscuits cut into pieces, weighing 580 grams in all, concealed in a condenser inside a television set.

The accused has been identified as Mohammed Aslam, a resident of Kasargod. He runs a sweets shop at Nayarmoole, it is said. Sources said that he had left for Dubai just three days ago.

He arrived at Mangalore International Airport from Dubai by a morning Air India flight.

The DRI officials, based on suspicion, checked the television set that was in his baggage and found the gold.

Aslam was arrested by the DRI officials.

    One who wants to smuggle or bring gold ask the goldsmith to melt and make a gold chain of 24k, just wear it and come no one will question you. Because you are wearing gold not carrying :-)

    I do not find this as an illegal, its not the problem with the passengers who are coming from Gulf. Its the problem with our Indian government and the law. After WORLD GOLD COUNCIL the cost of gold is almost similar in entire world. When its almost similar the question of smuggling does not come into picture. it was in 80's & 90's were the gold price was 50-60% difference between India and Gulf, then it can be called as Gold Smuggling. If any one is getting gold from Gulf these days its only because of the purity of gold in Gulf not because of the difference in rate. Let the Indian govt. bring a law in Indian to the gold deals to give the same quality of gold what we get here in Gulf. Then only this problem will be solved. Here the problem lies in the Indian Customs and Govt. Fells like all of the govt. workers are still illiterate. Even the India got Freedom from British, but we are still under the rule of Dumb Govt.

    Problem is NOT with 'bringing' Gold. problem is 'NOT DECLARING'
    If you dutyable items on arrival, customs will let you out after paying prescribed duty AND / OR un-prescribed amount of bribe

    No bunker bed, No hard labour, No sweat & blood, no slogging, no weddings, no container, NO NOTHING
    He may be poor guy. Possibly a VICTIM himself. Somebody must have called him to Dubai and in return of this favour this guy must have agreed to deliver his TV, possibly without knowing what is inside.
    He may be innocent. Truth will come out after interrogation.

    why blame this man, it is the government policies exist only in developing countries like Inida.If not then India will have tons of gold and India will be rich by gold.Forget the the adverse effect on the economy but this gold is not bought by Indian earnings and he want to make a little higher exchange rate for his foreign earnings.

    While I do not support the smuggling act, I am surprised that such a big issue has been made by clicking his picture and publishing in the media. Let him be tried as per the laws of the land. If at all you want to publish the photos, please publish those of our corrupt and unscrupulous politicians who enter politics with the sole aim of looting the country and feathering their own nests. Does anybody have the guts to publish their photos? I know I am just day dreaming to see our corrupt politicians behind bars because that is never never going to happen in our country. The politicians will keep on looting our country and we the people will keep on commenting in these columns without really being able to do anything. If at all anybody wants to do something for this country, let them think of finding ways to bring back the booty looted by the politicians and rotting in foreign bank accounts instead of trying to crucify a person who has smuggled some gold. God only knows the hardship he must have gone through to collect the money to buy this gold.
