UAE Agnesians, Aloysians contribute Rs 18.22 lac to their colleges

Dubai/Mangalore, Jul 15: Agnesian/Aloysian alumni based in the UAE have donated a total sum of Rs 18,22,000 towards their respective colleges, each college getting Rs 9,11,000,  from the savings gathered from their re-union held on February 1 this year.
 
This donation was possible due to the efforts of all committee members, fellow alumni and their sponsors.

The cheques were handed over recently to the college authorities represented by James Mendonca, the Aloyisan chairperson for the 2013 event and Wilson Samuel, one of the organizing committee members UAE Aloysian Alumni and also Jacintha Mendonca, chairperson for Agnesians for the 2013 event and Shobha Mendonca, the committee member.
 
On behalf of St Aloysius College the cheque of Rs 9,11,000 was received by the principal Fr Swebert D’Silva and Fr Walter at the college office.  The amount will be utilized for scholarships to the needy students who are economically deprived to pursue their higher studies and find good future to sustain themselves.
 
The contribution (Rs 9,11,000) by the Agnesians  was received by Dr (Sr) Prem D' Souza, the principal of St Agnes College.  The contribution will be used for scholarships for the deserving students.
 
The college managements of both the colleges thanked their past students for their generous thought and their dedication and love towards their Alma Mater in donating such an huge amount.
 
The Agnesians and Aloysians Alumni from UAE have been contributing to their respective colleges in support of various projects and scholarships since 1997, the time they formed their Alumni base in the UAE.
 
The contribution is the result  of the collective efforts and gratitude of past Aloysians and Agnesians to give back to their respective Alma Mater.
 
Aloysians/Agnesians Alumni jointly hold their reunion once in two years and whatever amount that is generated through the event  is sent to their colleges as token of gratitude towards the institutions which have moulded them to be successful in life.
 
The reunion held once in two years is a popular event and attracts large number of past students for a day of fun and recreation.

    I feel the amount collected ( or the amount generously given ) is too small for UAE people esp. when the US$ is Rs 60/-. What they have contributed is a pittance in real terms !

    Mr. Thomas - I stand by my decision irrespective of your comments. The donated surplus money collected by Agensian/Aloysian committee members is mainly through programme entrance fees paid by individuals, sponsorship from companies less expenses. I feel happy that such programmes are conducted once a year or two, wherein we meet all old friends and also make new friends and have fun to get away from stress. Money donated is not from "an association of like minded people". Agnesian/Aloysian committee members do announce in their meetings and also in their celebration that so much amount is donated to so and so institution. That announcement is far sufficient. A few individuals trying to take credit through photo op for public display which is deliberately arranged for is a dislike to me. I once again say "we need to stop it".

    Donation to any institution or for a cause is a good gesture but making it into a public display or publishing the same is unacceptable. Time we learn to do charity or donate silently. Many people of Agnesian/Aloysian alumni have attended the programme and donated generously but when a few or a couple of people go to donate the money to get a photo op then it is questionable. I feel in future this practice should be stopped.

    Mr. Eric Coelho, the donation is not made by individuals but from an association of like-minded people. Such donations must be made public and recognized for their good work, otherwise the general public who contributed will not know how and where the funds are utilized. And of course while presenting it, it is only the office-bearers would liaison with the beneficiary and not the entire association.

    St. Agnes College salutes its Alumnae of Dubai and gratefully accepts their contribution towards the Scholarship fund for needy students. I am particularly grateful to Jacintha and Shobha for visiting the college and handing over the cheque. God bless you.
