Mangalore, Jul 12: Members of various auto rickshaw unions in the city marched in protest on Friday July 12 demanding ban on entry of rural autorickshaws into city limits. They then held a protest in front of DC's office.
A massive rally was taken from Jyothi circle to DC's office where hundreds of auto drivers operating in different parts of the city raised slogans against the officials to stop rural auto rickshaw from entering the city.
On July 7 at regional transport office, a meeting of rural and urban auto drivers was held under the leadership of health minister U T Khadar to discuss the issue. At the meeting, the minister passed an order to allow rural rickshaws to enter the city in 10 days. The decision irked the city auto drivers and hence they decided to protest.
Addressing the protestors, Ali Hassan, co-ordination committee president said, "Health minister U T Khadar, instead of solving our problems, is creating more trouble for us. The decision was taken by Khadar mainly to pull Ullal votes. Even if Khadar brings the military force here, we are not scared as we are fighting for our rights."
He further said, "Whenever the auto rickshaw association approaches a minister with our problems, there is no positive response. Same is the case with other representatives too.
"Even if auto drivers work for long hours, the money which they earn is not sufficient to meet their basic needs. If rural area drivers enter the city, the problem will worsen. We will not allow rural autos to enter the city at any cost," he asserted.
B Vishnumurthy, auto drivers association president, Ashok Shetty, Arun Kumar, Aboobakkar Suratkal among others were present.
