Puttur, Jul 12: Ravi is a youth from Nelamangala near Bangalore, and his habit of chatting on facebook has proved to be a lifetime curse for him. He is skilled at doing electrician’s work, and owns a truck, which has been hired to a friend.
Ravi, who chatted on facebook during spare time, came across a girl who said she was from Puttur, working for a private firm at Bommanahalli near Bangalore, about three years back. Although they never saw each other, the relationship between them was cemented as they chatted over weeks and months. Ravi, it is said, grew a strong affinity towards her, and over time, felt it impossible to live without her. Having been too fond of her, he also remitted money to her account as when she requested. During the period since he got to know this girl through facebook, Ravi claims, he has remitted nearly Rs 14 lac to her account.
Ravi, who tried to commit suicide by the roadside at Nelyady in the taluk a few days ago, was admitted into a hospital in Puttur. Seeing his condition, someone had called 108 ambulance service, which in turn, brought him to the hospital here. When questioned about the reason for ending his life, he said he is unemployed now, and had failed to bag a job. “I had visited Mangalore and stayed in a friend’s room. But there too I did not get a proper job. I boarded a bus to Bangalore. When I got down at Uppinangady, the bus went away. I did not have money to go home, and therefore decided to commit suicide,” he explained.
When asked as to whether he had come here to search for the girl he came to know on facebook, Ravi concurred that is also a reason. “I spent lot of money for her, even neglected to look after my own mother during her old age. I also lost a decent job I had. Even now I am not sure as to where the girl hails from. The girl succeeded in mesmerizing me through her sweet words and make me spend whatever I had. Now, I find my life unbearable. Because of this, I made an effort to end my life. No one should fall in love with someone introduction on facebook,” Ravi said with tears rolling down his eyes.
Ravi is out of danger now. But his painful experience has come as a warning bell to those who are proceeding on this path, to restrain themselves from falling into this trap. While social websites do provide fun and new friends, their advantages end once you go beyond and emotions, empathy, love, etc make you blind and numb your brain.
