Mangalore, Jan 20: A long-awaited dream of the people of this part of coastal Karnataka was realized at 3.20 pm on Friday January 20 at the Bajpe Airport.

Kingfisher Airlines, India's fastest growing airline and first Indian carrier to win the prestigious "New Airline of the Year 2005" in the Asia Pacific and Middle East region from the Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation (CAPA), flew its maiden passenger flight from Mumbai into the city on Friday evening.

The Airbus A-319 operating on flight no 141 landed at the airport at 3.20 pm bringing along with it home-bound passengers from Mumbai. Kingfisher Airlines chairman Dr Vijay Mallya too flew on the same aircraft. Dr Vijay Mallya, dressed in all-white attire, was at his flamboyant best. After reaching the airport, he addressed the mediapersons in the conference hall at the airport.

The same flight left back to Mumbai around 4.15 pm. The new flight will provide convenient service for business and leisure travelers alike at inaugural true value fare of Rs 1,999 onwards for travel between Mumbai and the city. From February 16, the fare will be Rs 2,499.
With the launch of this new route, the number of daily flights offered by Kingfisher Airlines has gone up to 58 connecting 14 key Indian cities.
