Udupi, Jun 29: Udupi MLA Pramod Madhwaraj has alleged that the BJP had been trying to reap political benefit out of Manipal rape case, and was undertaking malicious campaign since the last seven days with this tacit aim. He was addressing a press conference here on Friday June 28.
“The government has tackled the situation in all seriousness. Some Congress workers have worked hard to crack the case, in coordination with police personnel. Still, the BJP was involved with malicious propaganda, accusing the district in-charge minister, MLA, and the government of trying to shield the culprits,” he said.
When questioned about the allegations that the accused are Congress workers, Madhwaraj said Congress party has thousands of workers, and that a person who is guilty of the crime, should be punished irrespective of whether he is a party worker or not. “Nobody needs to protect persons committing such heinous crimes, so as to ensure that no one dares to commit such acts in future,” he stressed. He also urged the policemen to investigate whether the arrested people had links with Sangh Parivar outfits.
In response to criticism made by CPM leaders about police investigation, security at university campus etc, Pramod insisted that the case was handled with utmost diligence and care. He said that the CPM leaders who made these accusations hail from far off places, and are not aware of the ground reality here.
Police informers, Sukesh Kunder and Wilson, Congress leaders, Diwakar Kunder, Narasimha Murty, Dinesh and some others were present at the press conference.
